What People Mean by "The Whoosh"
The term comes from online fitness and bodybuilding communities, most associated with the "Rapid Fat Loss Handbook" hypothesis popularized by nutrition writer Lyle McDonald: as triglycerides are pulled out of a fat cell and burned for energy, the theory goes, the cell's empty interior space is temporarily backfilled with interstitial water before the body reabsorbs and excretes it — producing a plateau followed by a sudden downward jump on the scale.
It's an appealing story because it matches something almost everyone who diets actually experiences. But it's worth separating the experience — which is real and common — from the specific explanation, which has not been directly measured in the way the four studies below have measured glycogen-water, sodium, or hormonal fluid retention. The honest position is: the stall-then-drop pattern is real; the "trapped water in shrinking fat cells" mechanism is a reasonable but unconfirmed hypothesis for part of it.
What's Actually Proven to Move the Scale Independent of Fat Loss
You don't need an unproven mechanism to explain why the scale doesn't track fat loss in a straight line. Several well-documented sources of water retention are large enough on their own.
1. Every gram of stored glycogen comes with roughly 3 grams of water

This classic study established that muscle glycogen is stored bound to water at a ratio of roughly 3 grams of water per gram of glycogen.
Implication: a low-carbohydrate stretch that depletes glycogen sheds water alongside it — sometimes several pounds' worth — and a higher-carbohydrate day or two refills both. This alone can produce swings of multiple pounds that have nothing to do with fat gained or lost.
2. Hormonal cycles retain and release measurable amounts of water

This study measured total body water across the menstrual cycle in young women and found fluctuations large enough to meaningfully distort body-composition estimates if not accounted for.
Implication: for many women, several days of each cycle involve real, measurable water retention layered on top of whatever fat loss is actually happening — a stall (or even a temporary increase) that reverses on its own within days.
3. Sodium and carbohydrate intake shift extracellular fluid quickly
Research on sodium handling in the body — including work on interstitial sodium storage by Titze and colleagues — shows that the body doesn't just excrete excess sodium immediately; it can hold it, along with associated water, in skin and interstitial tissue for a period before releasing it. Combined with the glycogen-water effect above, a single higher-sodium, higher-carbohydrate meal or day can visibly move the scale for 24-72 hours without reflecting any change in fat mass.
4. Planned refeeds and diet breaks predictably bump the scale — temporarily

Finding: higher-calorie, higher-carbohydrate refeed periods replenish glycogen and its bound water, producing a real but temporary scale increase that is not fat regain — a pattern that, in reverse, is exactly what produces an apparent "whoosh" once intake drops back down and the water is shed again.
Why the Stall-Then-Drop Pattern Doesn't Need a Special Explanation
Put the above together and the pattern explains itself without invoking anything unproven:
- Fat loss under a calorie deficit is genuinely continuous — your body doesn't "decide" to release fat all at once.
- Scale weight, however, is the sum of fat mass plus water, glycogen, and gut contents — several of which fluctuate independently of the deficit, by multiple pounds, on their own schedules (sodium intake, carb intake, hormonal cycle, stress, hydration status, recent exercise).
- When several of those factors happen to trend toward more retention at once — a higher-sodium week, the luteal phase of a cycle, added training stress — they can mask two or three weeks of real, steady fat loss underneath a flat or even rising scale.
- When those factors resolve — sodium normalizes, the cycle moves on, stress eases — the retained water releases over a day or two, and the scale "catches up" to where the underlying fat-loss trend already was. That catch-up is what feels like a whoosh.
Whether or not McDonald's specific fat-cell mechanism turns out to be part of the story, the practical experience — weeks of nothing, then a sudden drop — is fully explained by well-studied water dynamics layered on top of a real, ongoing deficit.
What to Actually Do About It
- Track a trend, not a day. Weigh daily if it doesn't feed anxiety, and look at a 7- to 14-day rolling average instead of any single reading. Steinberg et al. (2015) found daily self-weighing was associated with greater weight loss and better adherence to weight-control behaviors than weighing infrequently — the benefit comes from seeing the pattern, not from any one number.
- Expect stalls of one to three weeks as normal, not a sign the deficit has stopped working. If your average calorie intake and activity haven't changed, a flat scale most often means water is temporarily masking continued fat loss, not that fat loss has stopped.
- Keep sodium and carbohydrate intake reasonably consistent if you want a calmer scale. This doesn't change fat loss, but it removes one of the biggest sources of week-to-week noise.
- Use more than one measurement. Waist measurements, progress photos, and how clothes fit all move more directly with fat loss and are less noisy than daily scale weight.
- Don't chase the whoosh by manipulating water and sodium. Deliberately dehydrating or restricting sodium to force a lower number produces a real drop on the scale that has nothing to do with fat and reverses the moment you rehydrate — it measures nothing useful and can be genuinely unsafe if taken too far.
